Perishable Movements K. Ltd. about their vacuum cooling service:

“The product quality is maintained, ensuring a longer shelf-life”

Perishable Movements K. Ltd. is a mid-sized freight forwarding & logistics company based in Kenya, consisting of 60 employees. The company transports between 50 – 100 tons of produce per day, of which 40% needs to be cooled, such as fresh flowers, herbs & cuttings, and fruits & vegetables.

Because of this, the company opted to work with Weber Cooling due to their expertise in installing vacuum coolers for the transport of fresh produce, as well as their communication & after-sales services.

The vacuum cooling system provided, which is a system for cooling one PCM/CP6P Aircraft pallet with an average of 3000kg per load, allows for the product that Perishable Movements K. Ltd. transports to stay fresher for longer. Ideal product temperatures are maintained throughout the transit, with products having been cooled down to the core to a uniform temperature so the products arrive at their destination in pristine conditions.

Improvements to the cold chain
Since the company transports to different parts of the world, the cargo time differs per shipment. Deliveries to European countries can take up to 8 hours, Australia 16 hours, and Asia up to 18 hours. And even during the longest shipments, the cooled products need to remain at a certain temperature. That’s where Weber Cooling comes in.

“With Vacuum Cooling, due to the equal pressure in the entire room, the entire load of fresh products will be cooled uniformly in a short cycle of max 30 minutes down to very low temperatures. This uniform and quick cooling is the beauty of the system, which no other pre-cooling technology can guarantee,” says Sylvia van Uden of Weber Cooling.

“Ever since we’ve been working with the vacuum coolers, we’ve seen improvement in the temperatures of products when they arrive at their destination. When produce is vacuum cooled, we normally attain temps of 3.5 – 4 °C, which is ideal for our products. During transport, we normally see a rise of around 1 – 1.5 °C. Because of this, the quality of the produce is maintained, which is of great benefit to our customers since it ensures a longer shelf-life,” Linda Kerubo of Lift Cargo concludes.
