Export opportunities for Peruvian raspberry

Raspberries have experienced interesting growth in Peru. According to data from Fresh Fruit, between 2014 and 2018 it grew at a rate of 12% per year, exceeding 2.5 billion dollars; a record that had never been reached before.

“Since 2012, the year in which raspberry mother plants were imported from Chile, efforts have been made to increase their productive capacity. Hortifrut, the second-largest blueberry exporter in Peru, made its first raspberry shipments in 2019 and was responsible for 80% of all shipments. In 2018, there were no exports of fresh raspberries. Then, in 2019, exports amounted to 4,038 kilograms worth 17,158 dollars."

The main destinations for Peruvian raspberries were Europe (70% of the total volume exported), Panama (19%), and Canada (11%). Spain recorded the highest price: 6.89 dollars per kilo. It was followed by the United Kingdom with 5.43 dollars per kilo and the Netherlands with 4.33 dollars per kilo.

“It wasn't exported to the United States, but this market represents an interesting opportunity because it is one of the main world importers and the Peruvian fruit wouldn't have to pay tariffs. In addition, the North American market can pay high prices; for example, up until October 2019, the US paid an average of 7.67 dollars per kilo of raspberry to Mexico.

“There are high expectations for this fruit due to its good performance and attractiveness. In fact, it would help diversify the export portfolio in the face of the possible risk of saturation of blueberries or avocados, among other products,” stated Fresh Fruit's report.
