Dominique Le Nan, Bretagne Pack: “We want a production that is 100% French, from start to finish”

A French manufacturer of biodegradable cellulose-based nets

Located in the Finistère department, Bretagne Pack is launching its range of cellulose-based packaging nets.  At Bretagne Pack, the environment is a priority. The French manufacturer has designed cellulose nets in order to ban plastic completely from its production.

Open since November 28th, 2022, the company currently designs cellulose-based packaging nets for garlic, clementines, lemons, shallots, onions, peppers and tomatoes. The nets are therefore entirely biodegradable and certified for food contact. “Consumers just have to compost the packaging net. There is no waste, unlike with plastic,” explains Dominique Le Nan, CEO of Bretagne Pack. 

“We are the only French manufacturer of packaging nets.” Dominique Le Nan has a lot of experience with packaging nets. After 18 years at the head of Saveurs du Léon (garlic, shallot and onion packaging company also based in the Finistère department), the CEO knows the sector inside out. With Bretagne Pack, he strives to satisfy the needs of his clients while respecting the environment.

His experience in the sector helped Dominique realize how difficult it was to find packaging that complies with the new legislation. “It was difficult to find suppliers and raw materials. Not wanting to depend on foreign countries anymore, we looked for a French manufacturer but there was none!” The Bretagne Pack project then began to emerge and the company was officially launched in November 2022. 

Bretagne Pack has already received requests from foreign companies, but its priority is to supply French customers for now. “We first want to establish ourselves and firmly secure our activity on the French market, but we do not exclude the possibility to work with European companies in the future.”

Major challenges: Recruitment, quality, made in France, responsiveness and price
“The first challenge was to recruit and train our staff,” explains Dominique Le Nan. “The textile industry has practically disappeared in France over the last 30 years. Finding qualified people with experience in textile was therefore difficult. We also had to choose the right equipment, taking into account an important aspect which is the cost of energy. In other words, we had to find machines with good productivity and consuming the least possible. Additionally, the company works with a spinning mill based in the north of France, in order to use cellulose fiber that complies with the specifications. “Finding the right type of yarn - qualitative but not too expensive - to meet the packaging expectations was also a challenge.”

Bretagne Pack’s competitive position on the market is another advantage. “We have very interesting prices compared to our competitors. The fact that we are based in France allows us to have lower transport costs than our competitors who export. We are also more responsive to our clients’ requests because our delivery times are shorter.”

Dominique Le Nan will not stop there, as he plans to double its equipment within 2 years. With its 33 machines, Bretagne Pack currently focuses on food products but the newly created company is open to widening its range. “We could very easily design nets for Christmas trees, for example.”

Dominique Le Nan will be present at Fruit Logistica in Berlin on February 8-9th.
