According to EastFruit analysts, the wholesale price of onions in Tajikistan continues to grow rapidly, renewing previous records. Literally in one day, wholesale prices for onions increased by 1 TJS, which is equivalent to 8 US cents or an increase of 13% during 24 hrs. Prices have already increased by 20% in the week.
As you can see in the chart below, there has never been such a level of prices for onions in Tajikistan at this time of the year. Moreover, onion prices are highest ever. Now, onion prices are 3.8 times higher than the previous record level for this time of year. Retail prices for onions in Tajikistan are indeed already approaching the psychological level of $1 per kg.
It is interesting that, earlier, Kazakhstan announced the conclusion of a deal on the import of 6 thousand tons of early onions of a new crop from Tajikistan. However, there is still a lot of time before the new harvest. In the meantime, Kazakhstan itself has banned the export of onions, fearing a shortage. After all that, onion prices in this country remain extremely high.
Neighboring Uzbekistan has also imposed a ban on the export of onions, shortly after Uzbekistan, as prices for onions in the country also broke all records. It turns out that Tajikistan remains practically the only country in the region that has not imposed a ban on the export of fresh onions. However, there is no particular need for this, because prices in Tajikistan are already so high that they do not stimulate exports at all.
As you can see in the chart below, the wholesale prices for onions in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are absolutely identical at the moment.
