The first Orri of the season hit the European supermarkets

"Despite high prices, the demand for Orri mandarin remains high so far"

The Spanish Orri mandarin campaign is already underway as the first sales began this week. Prices are significantly higher than in the previous campaign, given the lower availability of supply, while demand remains high.

“The Spanish Orri wasn't being sold or bought last week. It arrived on the European supermarket shelves this week," stated Guillermo Soler, manager of Orri Running Committee, ORC.

Production is much lower this year. “Overall, the second season mandarin harvest is estimated to be 20 to 25 percent lower than last year's record production. Many marketing companies want to stock up soon to avoid being undersupplied. As a result, mandarin prices have spiked, including the price of the Orri, which is above the rest of the varieties,” stated the representative of ORC.

“One of the sector's main concerns is whether the price increase will allow maintaining the high demand throughout the campaign. We have only been campaigning for a week and there is still some uncertainty, but for the moment demand remains high,” stated Guillermo Soler. “If everything continues this way, the Orri mandarin campaign could end sooner than last year,” he added.

In this campaign, the calibers -in general- are smaller because of the drought and consecutive heat waves in summer. “At first we feared that the sizes were too small, but over the months they have recovered and the calibers of Orri have been reaching optimal values,” stated Guillermo Soler.

Spanish and Israeli Orri sales continue to divide the markets. “More and more markets are being divided between the two. There are those who buy the Israeli Orri because its season starts earlier and because they have traditionally always bought it there. Others prefer the Spanish Orri, whose sales are mainly aimed at exports.”

“On the other hand, despite its high price, sales in the Spanish market continue to grow, spurred by its unique flavor and by the promotional campaigns that are being carried out. We'll soon launch a new image of Orri to promote its consumption in wholesale markets, supermarkets, and fruit shops in Spain. We hope to re-create the impact that the brand image that we launched two campaigns ago had on consumers,” Guillermo Soler stated.
