Erhan Öztürk from packaging company Pap-Plast GbR.

"Due to the cost increases, some customers have switched back from paper to plastic"

Everyone is talking about sustainable packaging, especially in the food industry. "We offer our customers from a wide variety of market areas a wide selection of packaging concepts that take these sustainability criteria into account. Biodegradable materials, for example, are particularly popular, especially cardboard and paper. The Christmas business was a bit poor this year," says Erhat Öztürk , Managing Director of Pap-Plast GbR and packaging supplier based at the local wholesale market in Düsseldorf.

From a longer-term perspective, the market tends to focus on paper packaging in a wide variety of forms. Öztürk: "The procurement costs for paper and cardboard rose by up to 100 percent compared to 2021. In view of these rapid cost increases, some customers have switched back from paper to plastic. It remains to be seen whether this development will continue this year cannot be ruled out at this time."

Declining demand for grass paper and asparagus packaging
According to Öztürk, the increased procurement costs have also led to a stagnation of new materials. "Grass paper, for example, is far too expensive at the moment and is therefore hardly used. If the situation had been a little more relaxed, i.e. under normal conditions, this material could have established itself much more. In 2020 we already had several requests for grass paper," the packaging specialist explains.

In the fruit and vegetable sector, considerable additional sales can be achieved, particularly during the asparagus and berry season, Öztürk continues. "Our customers have observed a decline in demand for asparagus in recent years, especially among younger buyers. This is reflected accordingly in the need for the associated packaging materials."

In addition to classic packaging, the company also deals with the sale of other catering needs and hygiene items. "As is well known, the latter segment boomed during the pandemic, but at the moment the demand for these products is noticeably lower. We still continue to offer it though," Öztürk concludes.
