“We have successfully exported our oranges to Japan”

After its first successful shipment of oranges to Japan, more regular shipments to the Japanese market are expected, says Ahmed AlHagrawy, Head of Marketing & Sales for Egyptian citrus exporter Hama for Food Industries: “We have successfully exported our oranges to Japan. A team of dedicated Egyptian quarantine engineers have overseen the packing, stuffing and transport of the fruits to the port. We’re very proud to be one of the very few companies able to access the Japanese market and we’re looking forward to enhancing the access to the Japanese market by more regular loadings to the region.”

One of the advantages of being able to export to the Japanese market would be that it proves a company knows what it’s doing, AlHagrawy explains. “Gaining access to the Japanese market is very challenging. If you succeed in managing it, you will be surely succeed in managing all the other markets. Besides, it is a high value market with very good returns. The challenges one will encounter will the higher standards in terms of specifications that the Japanese market requires. Being outsourced from our farms which are Global GAP and SMETA ‘Sedex’ certified, the fruits are guaranteed to comply with all the requirements with terms of MRL as well as quality parameters.”

In general, the sizes of the oranges from Egypt seem to be smaller this season, says AlHagrawy. “Our oranges volumes this year are higher than last year in all varieties. Pineapple oranges, Navel oranges, and Valencia oranges. However, in general this season has seen mostly smaller sizes. Fortunately we do have large and medium sizes available as well, thanks to having various farms in the best fertile area in Egypt. Therefore we’re still able to supply all of the markets.”

“We do export to many countries in the Far East, Middle East, Europe, North and South America as well as African countries. Our brands Elgebaly, Zesty and Luxor are all well positioned in all receiving markets. At the moment, we are gradually shifting to Valencias. We expect high demand and prices for large and medium sizes as they are short in crop and there is relatively fair demand and good prices for smaller sizes,” AlHagrawy concludes.

Hama for Food Industries is going to exhibit at Fruit Logistica 2023 in Germany. You can find them in Hall B - Stand B-01.
