On Wednesday, Peru woke up to a national strike promoted by various social organizations that called for the closure of the Congress and the removal of President Dina Boluarte. The protestors blocked the main roads of the Andean south. The toll booths on the border between Peru and Bolivia were set on fire, and the border with Brazil was blocked.
The return of the protests in the country, in the form of an indefinite strike, coincided with a message that President Dina Boluarte delivered in Spanish and Quechua, in which she called for peace and "unity to promote the development of Peru."
The protests in the country have caused 28 deaths (by firearms) and dozens of police injured, especially in the Andean south where ten people died in Ayacucho in a single day.
Boluarte is also experiencing tensions abroad since so far the governments of Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Bolivia do not officially recognize her presidency. Mexico's interference prompted the expulsion of its ambassador, Pablo Conroy. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador defended the deposed Pedro Castillo, who is in preventive detention for 18 months for the crime of rebellion.
“In the midst of violence, there can be no investment and without it, there are no resources to meet the historical needs of Peruvians. It is important to generate legal security, political security, and social security,” the president stated. “Let’s put these concerns on the table. Let’s talk. The only way to understand each other is by listening to each other to make agreements that are fulfilled,” she added.
The protests have strongly affected the fruit and vegetable sector, leading to shortages at the national level and affecting the sector's exports and imports.
