Demand for lemons surges as pandemic measures drop

Recently, with the cancellation of almost all measures against COVID in China, the market demand for lemons has surged. The reason is that lemons contain vitamin C, which can really promote the human body's antioxidant and immunity enhancement. People believe that drinking fresh lemonade can relieve the symptoms of COVID infection.

"There is actually no scientific proof for this statement, but it is obvious that people choose to believe it." Mr. Wang, a lemon wholesaler in Beijing's Xinfadi Fruit Wholesale Market, shared his view with on the skyrocketing prices of lemon in a short period of time.

Compared with other fruits, lemons have a longer shelf life and can basically achieve uninterrupted sales throughout the year. According to Mr. Wang, "at this stage, the fresh lemons on the market are mainly from Sichuan. In just a few days, the price has risen from 4 yuan/kg to 10-12 yuan/kg, and there are occasional shortages. The market is obviously in short supply."

No matter whether in wholesale markets, supermarkets, or fruit stores, lemons have been frantically bought. Even so, the price surge is only temporary. Mr. Wang said, "Major purchasers have already seen the business opportunities and are transferring a large number of goods from the production areas. According to my prediction, once these lemons arrive on the market, the overall market price will definitely decline."
