Canadian producers need strong agricultural policies

Canadian producers need support with seasonal labour as well as financial support says Charles Stevens, Chair of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA).

He said the government needs to enhance inspection services and provide the kind of financial support American producers enjoy when faced with disasters. In 2021 labour shortages cost Canadian farms $2.9 billion in lost sales.

The support is needed on a wide range of issues from fertilisers to the government that is needed to intervene with the 'power of retailers' to set prices. All of this needs to be done to ensure the survival of Canadian farms Stevens said.
