Taiwanese pineapples are expected to increase their market share in South Korea next year

In the past few years, the mainland market has been the main export destination for Taiwanese pineapples. After the trade was suspended last year, Taiwanese pineapple producers began to look for new sales channels. Due to the high sugar content of pineapple, the storage period is relatively short, and the long-term logistics and transportation are not conducive to its quality.

"Next spring, the new season of Taiwanese pineapples will be harvested. In order to diversify trade risks and the sales market, we are currently planning to enter South Korea. Due to its geographical location, South Korea rarely grows pineapples. Most of the pineapples on the market are imported from the Philippines. In fact, the two major fruit items South Korea imports from the Philippines are pineapples and bananas," Rock Yen from Fruit Paradise Trading Co., Ltd. told FreshPlaza.

So far, the amount of Taiwanese pineapples exported to South Korea every year has been very limited, because, in terms of cost, Taiwanese pineapples are much more expensive than Philippine pineapples. After all, the Philippines produces a huge amount of bananas every year, and after years of hard work, the pineapple planting industry has developed on a large scale.

Nevertheless, Rock said: "Although the price is a factor affecting sales, the variety is also very important. The variety of Taiwanese pineapples is better. Preliminary market research shows that many Korean consumers actually like the flavor of Taiwanese pineapples very much, which greatly increases our confidence in entering Korea next year. "
