Nuremberg wholesale market photo report

Rising imports, personnel shortages and increased expansion

Annually, 200,000 tons of goods are traded at the wholesale market in Nuremberg, being delivered within a radius of 100 to 200 km, said Dominik Kitschke, market supervision group manager. (A full interview with Kitschke will appear on FreshPlaza next week).

The wholesale market businesses seem to be going quite well again. From the customer side, however, a measure of uncertainty is noticeable with regard to the high energy prices. Accordingly, a rather restrained or at least very selective buying mentality is currently a feature. Gastronomy customers, in particular, have adjusted their purchasing behavior - provided these customers have not already had to close down their businesses due to the pandemic.

Furthermore, as in many other sectors of the economy, the shortage of personnel poses further challenges for businesses. Despite these adverse conditions, many parties are looking to expand, and sometimes higher sales are achieved as well.

Interviews with individual companies as well as the market management will appear on next week.
