Peru could export pitahaya and aguaymanto to the United States next year

So far in 2022, the county exported 3.5 tons of pitahaya for 15,000 dollars and 46 tons of aguaymanto for 326,000. These products are mainly destined for Europe. However, the possibility of exporting pitahaya and aguaymanto from Peru to the United States seems closer after Josue Carrasco, the director general of plant health of the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa), confirmed that Senasa had reached an agreement with the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) so that these two fruits are exempt from the mandatory quarantine treatment starting the third quarter of next year, after demonstrating that these fruits do not transmit the fruit fly.

According to Fresh Fruit, Peru has only made test shipments of these fruits to the US market. Shipments of aguaymanto account for only 0.1% (75.38 kg) of the total volume, while those of fresh pitahaya account for 2% (60 kg).

These figures are very low as shipments to the United States usually account for 30% to 40% of the country's main agro-export product shipments. With this agreement, the country could double its shipments of both products next year.
