The United Kingdom's green vegetable and potato crops is experiencing a glut and large wastages due to mild autumn weather with fears of shortages looming early next year.
The milder weather caused early ripening of broccoli, cabbages and cauliflower that was only supposed to be ready over December and January. Some of the produce grew to unusually huge sizes due to the unusually fast growth period. Some producers say they have never experienced this sort of growth in the plants before.
Food charities in the UK are overwhelmed with produce and making sure people can get access to the surplus produce and to limit the wastage.
The earlier harvesting is likely to lead to shortages because the next growing cycle is only from the middle of next year. The shortages are likely to start after Christmas some experts predict.
