"We are experiencing a period of great change in the strawberry industry. For this fruit, demand is no longer seasonal, but has become steady throughout most of the year. In recent years, the varietal offer required segmentation in order to be able to offer the producers new solutions, useful to better face the markets," says Carmela Suriano, general manageress EMEA of Nova Siri Genetics, the breeding company based in Basilicata, Italy.

Nova Siri Genetics' research offers concrete answers to producers in geographic areas with warm temperate climate, typical of Mediterranean countries and, in general, subtropical areas of the planet.
"Our focus," continues Suriano, "is on areas with mild winters, since we offer varieties with reduced need in cold weather and suitable for production in the fall, winter and spring months, which can be used to obtain excellent results in terms of production and commercial performance. One of the cultivars that responds particularly well to these needs is NSG 203 - Marimbella®️, introduced in Europe in 2019 and awaiting protection in other countries in North Africa and South America. In Italy, the new cultivar has experienced exponential growth, going from 7 million seedlings distributed in 2020 to 29 million planted this year in the areas of southern Italy, particularly in Basilicata, Campania and Sicily."

Marimbella® is appreciated both when fresh and as a rooted plant. The first detachments occurred from the first week of November in the areas of the Sele plain (Campania), the province of Trapani (Sicily) and the Metapontino area (Basilicata).

The strengths of Marimbella® are: scalability of production, marked earliness, fruit quality and commercial life. It is a cultivar that, in the winter months and despite severe temperature changes, boasts medium to large calibers, appealing and homogeneous coloration and elasticity of the epidermis.
