A Woolworths customer has taken to the Internet to vent about the high cost of its watermelons. On Facebook, the customer voiced her outrage after noting that a whole watermelon was now priced at $34.32. A single quarter cost an incredible $8.58.
A Woolworths spokesperson responded that adverse growing conditions has affected supply and therefore the cost of watermelon. “We pay farmers the market price for their produce, which can be affected by weather and seasonality,” the spokesperson said. “The start of the watermelon season has been affected by wet growing conditions, resulting in reduced availability.
He continued: “We’re committed to delivering quality Australian fruit and vegetables to our customers at great value, and when in-season produce is in high supply we work hard to pass those savings on to our customers. Currently, customers can enjoy great value on an Aussie summer staple, with top quality mangoes in abundance across our stores nationwide.”
Peak watermelon growing season in Australia is between December and May - and 100 per cent of the watermelons sold at Woolworths are grown in Australia.
