Costa Rica began exporting pink pineapples to Qatar at the end of 2021 and this year the country is already exporting some 360 units by air a month to that destination. "Pink pineapple is a unique high-end Costa Rican product that reaches the most exclusive markets in the world. In addition to Qatar, we also ship them to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong,” stated Michael Calderon, spokesman for Fresh Del Monte.
"We decided to venture into Qatar because our distributor there was very excited to launch this very exclusive product for its customers, who continually enjoy trying new flavors," he said.
The pink pineapple's characteristic color is provided by lycopene, a component that is also found in tomatoes, watermelon, and grapefruit. This fruit was showcased in Costa Rica's Pavilion at the Expo Dubai 2020 (an event that was held between October 2021 and March 2022 because of the pandemic), which allowed the country to further publicize this product in the Emirati market.
