Bariş Korkmaz, Royal Gastro Frischcenter Herne:

"Encouraging demand from hospitality, but retail is slowing"

Since August of this year, new wholesale company Royal Gastro Frischcenter Ltd can be found in the Holsterhausen district of Herne. "We have taken over an existing wholesale business and are now in the process of expanding the product range and customer base step by step," Bariş Korkmaz, assistant to Managing Director Dr. Hasan Kemal Arslan explains.

The new wholesale company's clientele includes owner-operated supermarkets, confectioners and restaurateurs throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. "The majority of our clientele buys the goods locally from us in the pick-up market, but we also deliver. The catering trade is doing particularly well at the moment, but demand in the supermarkets and retail sector is dropping noticeably. You can just tell that the quantity purchased per customer is declining due to the current circumstances," Korkmaz observes.

Supply shortage for cucumbers
The lion's share of the product range is sourced from fixed suppliers at neighboring Fresh Park Venlo. Korkmaz: "Cucumbers are difficult to obtain at the moment, as the Dutch season is coming to an end and Spain is not yet represented on the market to the usual extent. On the other hand, we are still able to supply our tomato range without any problems. In terms of demand, we have recently been able to sell a lot of strawberries and melons, which are needed as supporting fruit in the confectionery sector. We also offer unusual and exotic items, such as cherimoya and prickly pears, as a supplement and mainly on pre-order, but these products are taken less within our clientele."

Expanding the packaging selection
In the coming years, the young company aims to expand its clientele and range of offerings where possible. "Regional catering has proven to be a strong sales channel and we are eager to further exploit this market. Meanwhile, we have also noticed that packaging materials, especially cardboard and paperboard, are well received by our customers. Accordingly, we intend to further expand this range as well," Korkmaz concludes.
