Tanzanian banana farmers receive higher market prices

Banana farmers in Tanzania's Rombo district, Kilimanjaro Region, are benefitting from a new collection centre to receive the product allowing them to benefit more from higher market prices.

The collection centre, allows banana producers to cut out middlemen who used to pay them much lower prices. Now, they are able to get up to TZS 15 000 ($6.4) more per bunch compared to TZS 2 000 ($0.85) a bunch they used to get. Their  bananas can now reach more markets across Tanzania.

East Africa Foods Company built the centre with the aim of reaching 15 000 banana farmers who can benefit. The farmers now use the better income to buy better houses as well as send their children to schools as well as university.
