While there's a slightly later start to the season, mango shippers say it’s a strong year for Peruvian mangoes. “This is by far the best Peruvian fruit I have seen in years. This year Peru has very beautiful fruit to offer which is excellent news,” says Daniel Ibarra, owner of Splendid by Porvenir.

There are also more mangoes with a projected increase in volume this year of 20-25 percent. “Peru is starting slowly since the season typically starts now or a little later. But it does seem as if there is more production this year than in other years and they are planning to offer more fruit to the U.S., Europe and Asia,” says Ibarra, adding that production is happening right now in Tambogrande, the main mango growing region in Peru. “The plan is to start shipping to the U.S. earlier due to higher volumes this year so around the first week of December.”
Varietal notes
While Kent is the main variety of mangoes Peru produces, it also produces the Edward variety.

The market is also seeing a strong start from a demand perspective. There is particularly strong demand for larger-sized fruit--6/7/8/9--while demand remains lower for smaller fruit, the 10/12s. “The market is good but the economy is our main concern, here in the U.S. and in Europe,” says Ibarra. “Since Peru exports only 35 percent of its product to the U.S., we should pay attention to their other markets’ demand and offers.”
He also anticipates steady movement on Peruvian mangoes throughout December and into January. “Retailers seem to be very open to offering exceptional fruit this year,” says Ibarra. Shipments will begin with the Kent variety, a popular option for consumers because its taste and size are both preferred by shoppers.
