Danper could venture into Ecuador after its expansion in Colombia

"We are exploring the opportunities of growing avocados and blueberries in Ecuador"

Danper has committed to extending the season of different crops by expanding its production to other countries in the region. The company began to produce avocados in Colombia in 2019 in alliance with a commercial partner, stated Rosario Bazan, the CEO of the company, within the framework of CADE Executivos 2022.

Growing avocados in Colombia allows the company to offer avocados all year round, she stated. In Peru, this fruit is mainly cultivated in the second semester and there is an effort to expand the harvests towards the first half of the year in the mountains to avoid the impact of lower prices in certain months in which producers from different parts of the world supply the markets at the same time.

"This year, avocado sales have been affected because consumers are taking care of their budget and because there is a lot of supply in the world. Prices will drop if we all enter the market at the same time,” he stated.

According to Bazan, Danper is exploring growing avocados and blueberries in Ecuador. In addition, the company is also working to expand the seasonality of peppers.

Fewer investments in Peru
According to Bazan, Peru faces a paralysis of public policies to promote well-being and boost private investment. That's why the investments in agribusiness and Danper have decreased in the last two years, he said.

“This decrease in investment is not noticeable at the moment because we are harvesting fields that were installed several years ago and that are just bearing fruit,” he said. However, he acknowledged, there are still opportunities to invest in certain areas and crops, such as growing artichokes in the mountains.

Projections
In 2022, Danper aims to increase its sales by around 20% over 2021 -when it invoiced around US$255 million- thus reaping the fruits of investments it made up to two years ago. The company expects this growth will continue next year, but the picture is uncertain after that.
