Potatoes packed without plastic

From October 1, in France, fresh vegetables and fruit weighing less than 1.5 kg cannot be packed in plastic. This is the result of the French law on the circular economy (fr. Loi AGEC).

According to Loi AGEC, in addition to potatoes, leeks, eggplants, tomatoes, apples, bananas, oranges, pineapples and mangoes must also be packed without plastic. As part of the French anti-waste law for the circular economy, next year, the ban on plastic packaging will also apply to cocktail tomatoes, green beans and peaches. In 2024, the AGEC law will also cover chicory, asparagus, mushrooms, some salads, herbs and cherries.

France is followed by Spain, which also prohibits the packaging of vegetables and fruit in plastic packaging. According to the announcement, the new law will enter into force in 2023 and will also apply to portions weighing less than 1.5 kg and such vegetables and fruits that can be packed in bulk without losing quality.

The common plastic bags have been replaced by the Silbo packaging manufacturer with paper packaging with a window. They meet the principle of "zero plastic" in packaging, and at the same time allow for a perfect presentation of the product and protect the contents of the package. Silbo proved that paper can be successfully used for the production of modern, functional flexible packaging. Not only the main material, i.e. kraft paper, comes from renewable raw materials. Also, the mesh is made of organic linen, not synthetic fibers. The imprint on Silbo packaging is made with the use of water-based inks, while the adhesives are devoid of alcohol solvents and are used only selectively - in the places of welding, and not on the entire packaging. It is a truly sustainable packaging.

The line of Mr Paper paper packaging from Silbo has already gained recognition among French potato producers who, adapting to legal changes, have introduced their products in Mr Paper packaging, which fulfill the status of "zero plastic", on store shelves.

"We believe that adapting packaging to the current legal requirements and contemporary environmental needs will be successful for those who build a true partnership with designers and packaging producers" - Marcin Ĺšpiewok CEO Silbo. "This partnership should be based on eco-design, that is, reconciling marketing needs with environmental requirements."

"Mr Paper's packaging line is tailored to the highest degree to individual customer requirements and is ahead of the previously announced legal provisions. Silbo, in addition to the packaging already available on the market (such as Bobasket, carry-bag, pillow-bag) for vegetables and fruits, also offers paper solutions for covering trays (top-seal and flow-fresh), in which small products such as cherry tomatoes, peppers, raspberries, blueberries etc."
