Three sisters from Dominican Republic aim to conquer avocado and tropical fruit export markets

It comes in threes for GL Sila Export, growers and exporters of mainly avocados, a business that was started three years ago and is run by three young women. They currently have the capacity to export three containers per week to customers in their three main markets, the US, Puerto Rico and the rest of Latin America with the hope to supply to Europe soon.

The trio of sisters who own and manage the company Sila Exports, Carmen, Maria and Rosanna Nin.

“Our Company GL Sila Export started three years ago. Our CEO and founder, my sister Rosana Nin, created the company for her interest in starting and owning a packing house to market our products harvested on our farms. Our company is unique, because it is a family business and it is run only by young women. We are three sisters in management positions. It is a young company, a certified exporter, and our products are harvested following good manufacturing practices, sanitation standard operating procedures, quality control and food safety. Right now we distribute avocados and mangoes in our country the Dominican Republic. We also export, to the United States, avocados, mangoes and quenepas (Spanish Limes),” states Carmen Nin, international marketing manager of the company who is based in Spain.

Sila Export mainly focus on avocado exports with all year round availability. They were part of the ProDominica pavilion at the Fruit Attraction exhibition held in Madrid early in October as first time exhibitors. “Madrid was a great experience. We were able to connect with potential clients in Spain and the rest of Europe. Now we are trying to enter the European market, and that is why we participated for the first time in the fruit attraction in Madrid this year. We also met customs agents, shipping companies and ports. I am based in Spain to provide services and meet the needs of our future European clients. We have avocados all year, the varieties are Semil 34, Hass, Carla, Bennet, Pola, Criollo, Lula and Popenoe,” states Nin.

The three sisters own a family farm in the Dominican Republic that also has a pack house to process the produce also sourced from other suppliers. They have studied different disciplines to prepare themselves for international business.

“Rosanna Nin Cid who founded the company obtained the funds through her hard work and savings. She also has good management skills and invested every bit of profit she obtained. Rosanna Nin Cid, is an Industrial Engineer. She has a Master’s degree in International Agribusiness. I, Carmen Nin Santana, head of International Marketing, obtained a Doctorate in Law. I'm a Lawyer and also have a Master's degree in International Relations and Diplomacy. Our youngest sister, Maria Nin Cid, who takes care of administration, has a degree in marketing and advertising,” states Nin.

“We work in different areas of the business, agri-food sectors, international trade, international purchases, international law etc. First we obtained the experience, and then we started the company. We didn't have any support. My sister Rosanna Nin did everything by herself. We started supplying our national market in the Dominican Republic first. Then we obtained the experience of being able to export to other countries. ProDominicana gave us a hand to explore new markets, and to position our products in the international market,” concludes Nin.
