“Our packaging is a recyclable product. It’s nature friendly as it is non-toxic, printable and washable”

As some companies move away from plastic, one Turkish packaging manufacturer feels it can be much more sustainable than cardboard boxes. The fact that PP plastic boxes are waterproof also helps reduce waste, as damaged packaging can easily lead to damaged produce.

Using PP plastic boxes has a real advantage over traditional types of cardboard packaging, says Fatih Topkaya, sales and marketing manager for Turkish packaging manufacturer King Karton: “A corrugated PP plastic box will not be affected or damaged when it has direct contact with water compared to cardboard boxes. Outdoor weather conditions could both affect and damage traditional cardboard packaging, which in turn could result in damages of the produce that is being carried in the packages. This is why our packaging has an advantage. The demand is increasing every other day, due to cardboard prices increasing, especially after the supply chain was slowed due to the pandemic.”

Topkaya emphasizes the nature-friendly aspect of their packaging to King Karton’s clients, as they export their packaging globally. “To start, one of the most advantageous aspects of our packaging is the fact that PP is a recyclable product. It’s nature friendly as it is non-toxic, printable, lightweight, washable, reusable and it has a high tolerance to pressure. We export our packaging all around the world, but we are especially strong in the Russian, Middle Eastern and some European markets.

As fresh produce can be damaged easily, Topkaya feels that this sector can benefit the most from their type of packaging: “The fruit and vegetable industry is our main sector. As we explained earlier, the waterproof property of corrugated PP plastic is a great advantage for the fruit and vegetable industry, because fruits and vegetables have their own moisture. Moisture and humidity are the biggest problems in this area, especially during shipping. Our boxes are not affected by moisture and thus both box and produce are not damaged.”

When hearing the word plastic, some might feel this type of packaging is not sustainable, but Topkaya explains why they feel their packaging is much more sustainable than cardboard boxes. “Equivalent material cardboard has no sustainability due to its weak features compared to our corrugated PP plastic material. Corrugated PP plastic also has more color and density variety. It allows more selection in the designing process with high quality printability. Corrugated PP plastic material is not a well known product in packaging, due to years of people persisting in the same habits. We want to introduce this packaging to as many people all around the world as possible to help save our planet, as the material is nature friendly and non-toxic. We also want to assure that product damaging issues during transportation will be solved with our products.”
