Pakistan expands onion imports from Uzbekistan

Last August, Pakistan started importing onions from Uzbekistan due to the huge loss of local crops because of the catastrophic floods. However, the volume of onion shipments from Uzbekistan to Pakistan increased several times in the first two decades of October compared to August and September. One of the main factors in the growth is the decrease in wholesale prices for onions in the domestic market of Uzbekistan.

From the beginning of January to the end of July 2022, there were almost no onion exports from Uzbekistan to Pakistan. But the natural disaster has changed the usual trade and Pakistan has been actively importing onions from Uzbekistan since August this year.

According to official statistics, exports of onions from Uzbekistan to Pakistan from the beginning of August to the current date amounted to 2,300 tons in August, 2,900 tons in September and 9,700 tons from the 1st to the 20th of October.

As can be seen from the data, the volume of onion shipments from Uzbekistan to Pakistan in the first two decades of October 2022 was at least 3.3 times higher than the monthly volumes in August and September and turned out to be 1.8 times more than in total in the previous two months.
