Forecast is strong for California strawberry supplies

California Giant Berry Farms shared a strawberry crop update, forecasting giant volumes of organic and conventionally grown strawberries ahead.

Strawberry production is currently in the Santa Maria, Watsonville and Salinas, California growing regions, with the Salinas and Watsonville regions slated to continue harvest through the end of October.

The company reports its Santa Maria-based grower partners are on track to deliver strong volumes of California strawberries forecast for early to mid-October.

“Plant development and production cycles were off to a great start, trending to be an above average production season before we ran into the recent heatwave,” said Kevin Dwyer, district manager at California Giant Berry Farms. “Despite the heat—and the recent rains changing our production curve—we’re still on track to deliver strong volumes of the high-quality fruit California Giant is known for.”

Strawberry production is currently in the Santa Maria, Watsonville and Salinas, California growing regions, with the Salinas and Watsonville regions slated to continue harvest through the end of October. Peak volumes of conventional and organic strawberries will be from Santa Maria pending any unforeseen, extreme weather events.

Second highest season on record
California Giant's news is in line with a post from the California Strawberry Commission. The state's strawberry production is expected to hit its second highest season on record, extending peak season well into fall. As the country's leading producer of strawberries growing 90 percent of all strawberries produced in the U.S., consumers can expect to see abundant availability in local grocery stores across the country.

"California strawberries are available year-round, and we are excited our peak season will extend into the fall. The increased demand for strawberries can be attributed to their benefits to health and well-being, plus the many ways they can be enjoyed in snacks and meals," says California Strawberry Commission Senior Vice President Chris Christian.
