Inflation, high shipping rates squeeze profit margins of Costa Rican pineapples

Despite the high inflation and the increased shipping rates squeezing its profit margins, the Costa Rican pineapple grower and exporter Tropicales del Valle continues to export its ready to eat pineapples to the United States, Europe and the Middle East for 12 months of the year.

According to Jose Carlos Chaves, responsible for commercial sales at Tropicales del Valle: “The company has been growing in a very positive and sustainable way through the years, despite all the big challenges that we faced during the last couple of years, such as the pandemic and high inflation, which made our production, duties and transportation costs more expensive and affected the profitability of the business due to the low profit margins that are naturally handled. However, this has not stopped us supplying the most demanding markets of the United States, Europe and the Middle East with our high-quality premium pineapples, conventional green and golden Ready To Eat, which we send by air and by ocean, making it available for 12 months of the year.”

The pineapple grower and exporter is looking forward to 'Fruit Attraction' that starts tomorrow. “This year we will have a presence at Fruit Attraction Madrid again, but with a surprise for all our clients.  Tropicales del Valle has made the decision to invest in its own separate stand. We will be in Hall 6, Stand 6B08, and we will have more space and privacy than in previous years and a few more surprises await visitors in addition to the pineapple tastings that we will have.”

“Our success has not only been due to the fact that we have diversified in the right markets, but also because of our high degree of commitment. This has driven us to maintain the premium quality of the pineapples, high service levels, and obtain the most important certifications in the activity such as Global Gap, RFA, BRC, SMETA, PRIMUS GFS, among others. These certifications allow us to supply the most important retail chains in the world, as well as world high-ranking processors, wholesalers and distributors.”

“Our quality we have proven for many years, our pineapples are highly aromatic, yellow on the outside and with high brix levels. They are ripened in the plant, with high nutritional properties. We ship them by air and by ocean, and we currently have a total production of 1,400 net hectares, exporting approximately 10 million boxes per year. Our goal is to continue producing a high-quality product that allows us to reach the most demanding markets and customers in the world,” concludes Chaves.
