Veiling Zaltbommel's digital auction to go online around Feb 2023

The Dutch cooperative Veiling Zaltbommel is hard at work preparing to introduce its digital auction. This system will increase fruit and vegetable auction sales via a digital portal. It should be operational around February of 2023.

The current auction room up for renovation

According to director Gerard van den Anker, Veiling Zaltbommel will continue auctioning by lot. "Every grower has their volumes and products with an appropriate price for those. Our communication shows interest from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany for our digital auction on both the growers' and buyers' sides. We're busy registering those interested parties."

"There's also an unusually wide interest from the market to put "presales" digitally on the market, for example, for Conference pears. Other organizations are discontinuing their auctions; that gives Veiling Zaltbommel an extra boost. The buyers and growers from elsewhere that used those systems will find refuge and are very welcome with us," says Gerard.

Investing in this digital auction should strengthen Veiling Zaltbommel and its growers' market position. "After all, market information and price transparency are invaluable. Behind the scenes, people are working hard to make the digital process a reality. Making it as pleasant as possible for buyers to go digital is the cooperative's top priority. Remote auction sales will broaden our customer base immensely. Plus, we're strategically located on the A2 where many transport routes intersect."

“There's a lot of market demand for high-quality, fresh, healthy products. Like direct sales, the added value of a well-functioning auction once again proved itself this spring, and we're seeing volume growth. Price transparency and flexibility are of paramount importance to us. We have short communication lines with our growers and buyers, which is appreciated. We expect this to expand further with the digital auction's arrival," Van den Anker concludes.
