Between January and July of 2022, it increased by 6%

The international demand for Peruvian fruits and vegetables is increasing

Peruvian fruit and vegetable exports between January and July of 2022 amounted to 3,051 million dollars, i.e. 6% more than the 2,889 million dollars achieved in the same period of 2021, stated the Agricultural Export Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

The country showcased its offer, which has experienced an increasing trend in recent years (January-July), at the Expoalimentaria fair, the leading food and beverage fair in Latin America, which was held at the Jockey Club Convention Center in Lima and ended on September 23. Expoalimentaria seeks to articulate the demand for buyers from the 5 continents with the offer of 330 domestic and foreign companies.

Fruits
According to data from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, fruit exports between January and July 2022 amounted to 2,425 million dollars, i.e. 5.2% more than in the same period of 2021.

The avocado was the main export item ($684.8 million) and, despite having contracted by 15.5%, accounted by 28.2% share of all fruit exports. It was followed by grapes with 583 million dollars and a 24% share, blueberries, fresh or dried mangoes, and uncooked or cooked mangoes.

The US was the main destination with 936.4 million dollars, accounting for 38.6% of all shares and a 37.5% increase in purchases. It was followed by the Netherlands with $488.9 million (-11.9%) and a 20.1% share. The top ten markets also included Spain, China, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Canada, Chile, South Korea, and Mexico.

Vegetables
Vegetable exports amounted to 625.8 million dollars, i.e. 7.3% more than in the similar period of 2021.

The most requested products were fresh or chilled asparagus ($158.4 million), which despite having contracted by 10.7%, accounted for 25.3% of vegetable exports. Paprika ranked second with 59.4 million dollars, a 25.2% increase, and accounting for 9.5% of all vegetable exports. Prepared or preserved asparagus also stood out.

The US was the main destination with 285.8 million dollars, a 1.7% increase in purchases, and a 45.6% share. Other major markets were Spain ($93 million), Mexico, the Netherlands, France, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, Chile and Colombia.

Frozen products
The commercial manager of the Lesergen agro-industrial company, Víctor Muñoz Lecaros, said that in recent years there has been an evolution in the export of frozen fruits, pulps, and other vegetables to the USA, Spain, Canada, and Latin America because consumers were increasingly looking more for safe food with high nutritional properties.

"A few years ago, this segment was gradually increasing. However, there was a strong increase in frozen food consumption in the pandemic, not only because of a safety issue but also because they are easy to use."
