Dirk van den Heuvel, HillFresh:

"Good demand for Limelon everywhere, but England and Germany top the list"

"Demand for Limelons - the sweet melon with a lime's tangy flavor profile - has been good and increased again this year. The weather certainly helped. There's growth in all countries, but England and Germany top the list with above-average growth," says Dirk van den Heuvel of HillFresh.

This year, this Dutch importer also had commercial volumes of the organic variety available. "We started with several new organic retailers. We couldn't yet fill programs up to the end of August; we should be able to do that next year."

HillFresh has no complaints about this year's Spanish Limelons availability. "We've divided the cultivation between three areas in Spain," explains Dirk, "which ensures continuity. There was good availability the whole season, with only the Murcia season starting a week late. That wasn't so bad; we'd expected a two to three-week delay."

The first Limelons from Brazil will follow the Spanish season in mid-September, with Costa Rica and Honduras following in January. Could this premium melon become available year-round? "That's still challenging," answers Dirk. "We've not yet succeeded in matching up all the seasons, but we're working on it," he concludes.
