Puente Blanco: "faces same challenges as rest of world - rising prices, fuel, logistics and fertilizers"

Good upcoming garlic export season expected from Argentina

“This year, weather conditions in Argentina have been very beneficial for the quality of our organic garlic and other produce so we are expecting excellent quality and quantities for the coming season. The most important market for Argentine garlic is Brazil, but our company mainly exports to Europe, The United Kingdom, The United States, Japan and Australia,” says Nicolás Giménez, Sales Manager from Puente Blanco S.A.

“However, we face the same challenges as the rest of the world: rising costs due to higher fuel prices, logistics, supplies and access to fertilizers. All these challenges can be solved with foresight and organization,” states Giménez.

Puente Blanco S.A. is a family owned company located in the province of Mendoza, in the west of Argentina. It´s one of the oldest and leading garlic growers in the area. They export approximately 200 000 to 300 000 10 kg boxes per season. “We are in charge of the whole production circuit, that is to say, production, packaging and sales. Our farms have an approximate extension of 800 hectares, distributed in 4 different farms. This season we have 350 cultivated hectares. This extension allows us to rotate crops year after year so as not to exhaust the productivity of arable land. We are certified with all the international standards required by our customers. Through conventional agriculture, we produce garlic, onion, potato and squash. Also, in other fields, we use organic and biodynamic agriculture, with garlic being our main product. Throughout our season we employ around 250 people.”

He says Puente Blanco has a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental care, so in 2005 they decided to change their garlic production method to organic and biodynamic.

“Argentina's location is a privilege since it is out of season in the northern hemisphere. Because of this, we can provide fresh products when the rest of the market do not have them. Since we are two months away from the harvest of the new season, prices have not yet been established. Due to the excellent quality of our products, we have good expectations for the next season and the price, as always, will be established by the international market. During the major trading season, there is no other supply of fresh products so there is no competition,” he stated.
