The 360º Avocado R+D+i initiative seeks to develop a system for predicting the optimal degree of maturity of avocados through the use of artificial intelligence techniques, including machine learning, based on the analysis of various data sources, such as the evolution of the microclimate of the farms evaluated, the phenological responses of the crop, and the different observations of pests and possible diseases. This is the second part of the multidisciplinary EvocatoR&D project, which has already validated this technique in laboratory environments.
The improvement of the technique has been aimed at increasing the potential for success in validations, thus improving both the prediction models and the quality of the data with which they are trained, as well as the reliability, protection, and ease of use of the sensory technology used and its interaction with the user through a mobile application.
The tool under development will make it possible to eliminate the costs associated with current techniques to determine the ripeness of the fruit, improve the qualities that the final consumer receives, enhance the competitiveness of companies and the agri-food industry, minimize the impact of this activity on the environment, and reduce costs.
The project is an industrial research initiative coordinated by onTech Innovation, the largest business organization in the digital economy and the largest technological and biotechnological cluster in Andalusia.
It is financed by the central government with Next Generation funds and the tool is being tested in companies such as Grupo La Caña. Nasrids, a software product engineering company, Industry 4.0 projects, and Fidelsol, the Free Software R&D Foundation, are also participating in the project.
