Carrefour Group:

“Our sales of organic bananas have increased by 45% in three years”

Since 2014, Carrefour has decided to make a strong commitment to one of the flagship products of the fruit and vegetable department. “We have chosen to promote our offer of fairtrade organic bananas in all of our stores. Bananas are the most solicited and number one reference in the organic fruit and vegetable section, representing 30% of the volumes,” explains the Carrefour group.

“It is actually the most consumed product in the world that is grown outside the European Union. Adopting an organic and fairtrade approach for this product was essential for the Carrefour group as it would have a very strong environmental and social impact, on a very large scale. Through this initiative, Carrefour supports a responsible product, good for the planet, while guaranteeing a fair remuneration for the producers and workers of the plantations.”

A commitment that pleases the consumers since the sales of these fairtrade organic bananas keep increasing. “Our organic bananas are as popular as ever, being the number one selling product in the organic fruit and vegetable section. Their sales have increased by 45% between 2018 and 2021. Generally speaking, there is a growing interest from customers for organic and fairtrade products. The sales of fairtrade organic products have increased by 8% between 2019 and 2020, a growth which has continued in 2021.”

In order to promote a more responsible agriculture, Carrefour is committed to being the leader in the food transition for all, in order to offer all its customers healthy quality products at an affordable price. “Accompanying the producers in their organic conversion, supporting more environment-friendly methods of production such as agroecology, and guaranteeing a fair remuneration are some concrete actions to get there and promote a sustainable and responsible agriculture.”

Carrefour intends to strengthen its approach to promote organic and fairtrade products, with the objective of reaching 45,000 partner producers in the organic, local or Carrefour Quality Branch by 2025.
