Vegetable prices in local markets across Chennai have dropped as the volume of vegetables arriving at Koyambedu wholesale market has increased substantially. In December, the Koyambedu wholesale market was recording arrival of 3,000-3,500 tons of vegetables every day.
Now, it has increased to more than 5,000 tons per day. Brinjal, shallot, potato and tomatoes all saw drastic price drops. For instance, the Ujala variety of brinjal, which was sold for up to 100 per kg in the retail markets a month ago, is available for 55 now. The shallot, which was sold at not less than 70 in January, is sold in the range of 50-55 in local markets now.
