Pakistan: Cold fog damages oranges and mangoes in Punjab

In Punjab, intense cold, accompanied by fog, has put the livelihoods of farmers in Multan and Jhang at risk. Orange and mango crops are suffering severe damages. In Multan, when the temperatures dipped to 4oC, mango fields spread across more than 32,000 ha fell prey to frost. More than 50% of the fruit was damaged in the plant-freezing cold. The frost damages plants because it freezes the moisture inside the cells of leaves, stems and shoots.

Meanwhile, fog in Jhang is killing off oranges and kinnows. Farmers fear they will incur huge losses in the upcoming days.
