The production of summer fruit has dropped in quantity, as widely expected, but thanks to the La Grande Bellezza Italiana (LGBI) supplies have been continuous since mid-June. "We will have high quality produce available until mid-September, thus meeting market demands. Of course, this year the volumes involved were down, but they were compensated for by a high °Brix, post-harvest durability and intense fruit color," explained Stefania Ponso, one of the Italian network's representatives.
The three production areas where the network companies are present are region Apulia, the province of Verona and region Piedmont. "This year, we sold more blistered loose peaches and nectarines in single layer packages than packaged ones. Prices have always been satisfactory, and we have worked well. We still have high quality production, and we will continue with marketing until at least mid-September."
As usual, the caliber played a major role, but this must be accompanied by an adequate organoleptic level. The weather conditions did not favor an increase in the weight of each individual fruit, but with the correct agronomic management, hydro-irrigation, pruning and thinning, appreciable results were obtained.
Yellow O'Henry peaches have recently been packaged in Apulia, while in Piedmont the varieties available are the Royal Sweet peach and the Dulcior nectarine.
The La Grande Bellezza Italiana will also be present at Macfrut, in a stand that aims to provide a venue for meetings and discussions.
