Madagascar : Lychee season looks promising

The 2018-2019 lychee season in Madagascar is looking good with 82% of the 1,488 trees in the North and South of Tamatave in production, compared to just 35% at the same time last year. Weather is good for flowering, however fruit setting, which is occurring at the moment, will determine harvest forecasts.

Madagascar is the world's third biggest lychee producer, behind China and India. Annual production is estimated to reach 100,000 tons of while less than 20,000 tons are for export. They are the biggest lychee exporter on the European market, but they have also started recently exporting to Dubai, Russia, South Africa and the Indian Ocean.
