Good conditions expected for California cauliflower season

Cauliflower supplies in California have transitioned to the warmer districts this month as the northern US growing areas concluded their season a few weeks ago. A slight dip in production is expected for the next few weeks as the Winter/Spring cauliflower regions begin and the Summer/Fall regions slow down. Growing conditions across California remain favorable.

"The cauliflower season for us here in southern California began at the start of November," said Suzannah Underwood, of Underwood Family Farms. "We grow a number of varieties, including standard white, purple, orange, broccoflower, and romanesco. Growing conditions have been very good, especially now that it has cooled off and, as a result, production is picking up in the region. We are expecting a good season with close to average yields. Quality, also is expected to be high as long as the weather remains favorable."

Good demand for romanesco
Demand for regular cauliflower remains steady across the US, and supplies remain subdued until the southern California production picks up. The romanesco variety is showing a rise in popularity among consumers, despite the higher prices. Romanesco cauliflower is a pale green cauliflower with cone shaped, spiraling florets.

"The market is unpredictable at the moment and cauliflower is currently in short supply," Underwood said. "Cauliflower is not a huge produce item but it has been popular at local markets and food stands. Demand has remained steady, but the romanesco has enjoyed good movement. Romanesco is not new but it is beautiful and not found much in retail stores and typically sells for a little more than the regular varieties. Quality is always high on our varieties and our cauliflower enjoys a consistent market. Many customers enjoy the flavor in their cooking, and there are a lot of great cauliflower recipes out there."
