Uruguay: Blueberry sector suffers heavy losses

According to the last evaluations and tests carried out in the different establishments, the climatic events on October 18 - which included torrential rains, thunderstorms, localized hail, and strong winds of over 100 km/hour- and on October 1 and 2 in the departments of Salto and Paysandu - have caused great losses to the sector.

Estimates are that producers lost 1.5 million kilos of the 2.4 million kilos they expected to export at the beginning of the harvest. To date, they have exported 650 thousand kilos, and there still are 250 thousand kilos to be exported.

90,000 wages were lost in direct wages (harvest and packing) and indirect wages (transport of harvesters, transport of fruit, airport logistics, among other links in the value chain).
