Cameroon: banana exports reach 199,000 tons over first 9 months of year

The Haut Penha Banana Plantation Company (PHP), the subsidiary in Cameroon of Marseille's Compagnie Fruitière, is by far the leader in dessert banana production in Cameroon. According to Assobacam (Cameroon banana association), out of the 199,000 tons exported by Cameroon between January and September 2015, the PHP alone exported 117,000 tons (i.e. 60% of total exports).

National producers led by the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), a company controlled by the state and is the country’s 2nd biggest employer, only exported just over 81,000 tons over the first 9 months of the year.

Assobacam’s statistics were marked by production from the Mbanga Plantations Society (SPM) ending due to tensions in the treasury. They used to farm up to 800 hectares in the Moungo region with banana production reaching 40,000 hectares per year.
