El Nino has affected tomato prices in Kenya, which have increased by 40%. Tomatoes grow during warm seasons before rain, and the cycle has been disrupted by heavy rain throughout October.
The rainfall has increased the presence of Wilt bacteria which is destroying plants.
A 64kg box of tomatoes is now being negotiated at $70 compared to $42 a few weeks earlier and $1.1/kilo in Nairobi.
This soaring increase in fruit prices leads to questions on adapting African agriculture and climate change, at a time when Cop 21 talks are taking place in Paris. El Nino has disrupted African agriculture and created droughts in some areas and flooding in others.
