Europe: Unitec improves fruit quality

The approach chosen by Unitec, a company specialising in the development of technologies for the processing and classification of fruit and vegetables is to have a branch in Murcia and 12-13 technicians and sales managers that can reach all the main producer regions in Spain - this is the approach chosen by

"Spain is very open to varietal renovation and new crops. The strength of Fruit Attraction is the fact that the country has understood it needs a single identity at the disposal of customers," explains sales manager Raffaele Benedetti (in the photo below).

"Unitec products are used mainly for stone fruits like cherries, but even for cherry tomatoes."

"Cherry Vision 2 improved the classification of the internal and external defects of cherries. Many producers worldwide chose this technology, which guarantees significant results in terms of profitability and classification. For example, the machine enables the placing on the market of fruit with similar colour, shape, brix level, ripening stage etc., thus improving customer retention in the long term."

"In addition, this innovative technology means packing stations can plan their export strategies better keeping in mind the preferences of the various destination markets. The standardisation of sorting processes guarantees the high quality of the produce arriving on the market, as only the fruit with the right characteristics is shipped."

"Nowadays, we do not follow the concept of absolute quality. Everything is based on the quality perceived by the various classes of final consumers, i.e. those who prefer sweeter fruit will think that the produce with a higher brix level is of higher quality. Our technology is therefore at the service of producers and consumers to avoid any incoherences in the products provided with the various supplies."

"Italy is finally paying more attention to investments in technology that focus on the research for quality and reliability. Many companies are growing and are looking to become more efficient using technology."

It seems periods of crisis do have some positive effects. According to Unitec's manager, final results are crucial in the relationship with the client - "finally, people are starting to think not only about the cost of the investment but about how useful technology can be to improve their business and efficiency. This way, technology repays itself."
