TTIP’s eleventh round of negotiations for EU and US

The eleventh round of negotiations of the Transatlantic Agreement on Trade and Investment between the EU and the United States is being held in Miami between Monday Oct 19 and today, Friday, October 23. As part of the negotiations, FEPEX analysed the evolution of the horticultural trade between the EU and the United States, the effects of tariff protection and phytosanitary barriers.

FEPEX shares the general objectives of the current proposals, and expectations are that the agreement will contribute significantly to improving the export of fruit and vegetables. However, the analysis of the agreement generates insecurity because the text allows for a wide margin of interpretation, especially the current legal text on sanitary and phytosanitary measures project.

Spanish exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to the United States remains low in relation to the size of that market. In 2014 it amounted to 47,875 tons, 9% less than in 2013, and amounted to $50.2 million Euro (-8%), representing 0.4% of total exports that year. According to FEPEX, up to July 2015, exports stood at 12,779 tons worth 19 million Euro.
