Italy: Cauliflower consumption low

Winter has yet to arrive, as temperatures are still above the seasonal average. This of course effects the consumption of winter vegetables, which are still low. Prices at the Bologna wholesale market hover around €0.80-0.90/kg and can reach €1/kg for excellent quality produce.

The produce sold comes exclusively from Italy - Apulia, Marche and Campania in particular. Cauliflowers from these areas will be available until spring.

"Consumption is OK, but not as lively as it used to be in previous years. Cauliflowers are in fact a typically autumn/winter vegetable, so they only sell if it's cold. We do hope this trend is only due to the temperatures and not to the crisis, as we can wait for temperatures to go down, but there is little we can do about the crisis."
