Spain: Courgette prices expected to increase in the coming weeks

There is plenty of courgette in the markets at the moment, although according to Andalusia's Prices Observatory, its production has increased only moderately compared to other vegetables, as many early crops are coming to the end of their cycle.

"In general, the courgette production is greater than last year in the area of Nijar, where many growers have opted for this crop instead of tomatoes because of its good and consistent performance, as well as the low cost of its seeds. By contrast, in other production areas like Las Norias and Ejido there is a downward trend, with 10% less planting this year; thus, the campaign's total volumes could be similar to last season's," explains Juan Sillero, of the technical department of Frutas Escobi.

The courgette campaign started with prices exceeding 2 Euro per kilo at origin, which benefited the few producers who planted in August. During week 46, prices have stood at an average of 0.40 Euro per kilo at origin, although they are expected to increase in the coming weeks due to the completion of the early cycle harvests, which are expected to end in fifteen to twenty days, according to Juan Sillero.

Based in Las Norias, Frutas Escobi grows its own courgettes, which are shipped mainly to export markets, mainly the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. "Russia was a market where we exported large calibre courgettes, but since the ban was implemented we've had to find ways to grow smaller sizes."

Under the Escobi brand, the courgettes are marketed mostly in cardboard boxes, with flow pack and film, as they are primarily intended for large retail chains.
