Russia remains important market for Turkish citrus exporters

Despite the complications in the Russian market for fresh produce exporters, Russia remains the number one export destination for Turkish citrus.

Last year, except for oranges, Russia was the main recipient of Turkish citrus across every category. For easy peelers, Turkey sent 206.6 million kilograms of shipments to Russia – the next most popular export destination, Ukraine, received 120.7 million kilograms. The same was true for lemons, with Russia receiving 112.4 million kilograms while Saudi Arabia received 46.3 million kilograms. While the gap between the number one and number two export destinations was less severe for the grapefruit category, Turkey sent more than 23.0 million kilograms of grapefruit to Russia than it did to the second-most popular destination. This underscores how important Russia is to the Turkish citrus industry, where 40 percent of the nation's production is exported.

That important market, however, has been fraught with problems this year. "The recession of rouble around 30-40 percent have really adverse effects upon the Turkish Exporters. Morover, due to the fact that our expoters are trading on ruble basis and 3 month dated in Russian Federation, the biggest fresh fruit and vegetables market of Turkey, the exporters are stucked in a difficult situation," said
Erdinç İnan Yilmaz, Board Member of Turkish Citrus Promotion Group.

“According to statistical data collected through October of this year, Russia is the most important destination for Turkish citrus exports,” said Yilmaz.

Reflecting that, the group has undertaken a campaign on Russian television and in Russian publications to promote Turkish citrus in Russia. They will follow that up with in-person events with key members of the fresh produce industry.

“This year, 25 exhibitors from Turkey will be at Fruit Logistica, and more exporters than last year are expected to be at the event,” said Yilmaz. “A cocktail reception will be held in order to bring Turkish exporters and buyers together. Fresh orange juice will be served and backpacks will be distributed at the stand of the Citrus Promotion Group.”
