The in-class portion of the Western Pecan Production Short Course will take place at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum Oct. 20 and 21.
“The idea is to cover as much as possible, from start to finish. That means everything from how to select a pecan orchard site, which varieties to plant, and the best tree planting arrangements all the way to hedge pruning mature trees and marketing nuts,” said Richard Heerema, New Mexico State University Extension plant specialist.
The cost per person is $300 and it includes lectures, a binder with lecture notes, three lunches as well as refreshments and field trip transportation.
“We will have speakers from NMSU and the University of Arizona with a wide range of expertise, including horticulture, soil science, entomology, plant pathology, weed management and economics,” Heerema said. “On the third day of the short course we will have a field trip to local pecan-related businesses and the NMSU Leyendecker Plant Science Research Center.”
This course is intended for anyone, from those who are new to the pecan industry to those who have grown pecans for years and do so more profitably.
“Attendees can expect to gain a strong research-based background in pecan production in the arid and semi-arid southwestern U.S.,” Heerema said.
