Breton vegetable producer explains his anger

Amongst the vegetable producers voicing their anger at Saint-Brieuc on Thursday was Alexandre Jacob, a 26 year old producer in Paimpol. He is not earning a proper living, but wants to believe he still has a future in the sector.

The young producer began in 2011, on over 40 ha he grows cauliflowers, artichokes, potatoes, Paimpol beans and carrots. “Like my colleagues, I am not earning a living at the moment” he says.

“Production costs for cauliflowers are €0.50. If I earn €0.30 on sales all season this is a €0.20 loss per cauliflower, multiplied by 18 ha of the cauliflowers I grow… If I did not have the support of my parents who have a farm, I would have had to invest in material, and I may not have been able to be a producer today.”
