Madagascar is expecting a larger lychee harvest this year and so has to find new markets to get rid of the extra. The possibilities of a proposed export to South Africa are being looked into at the moment, reports website lexpressmada.com The realisation of this is a new sales possibility for Madagascar entrepreneurs.
Europe is the largest buyer of lychees from Madagascar but the exporters will also be able to enter the South African market this year. According to information from a lychee exporter South African importers are interested in the Malagasy lychees and people are now waiting for the government of both countries to make agreements. 100 tonnes will be exported with the first lychee delivery.
The Malagasy lychee production is 100,000 tonnes per year. Madagascar is the fifth largest lychee producer in the world, after China, India, Vietnam and Taiwan.
