Speculation about the pear market this year

"Pear prices won't change much more this season"

During the last few weeks a number of pear shipments went to Russia from Belgium and the Netherlands. "That started about six weeks ago with a continuous demand and each week they came back to buy more" a Belgian exporter tells. "At the moment it is a bit quieter and that is because of the arrivals this week. Also trading is calmer in general round about this time. Yesterday (Tuesday) and today will see return prices to week 52 and week 1 and arrivals in week 3. After that the export will increase somewhat again."

More speculations
"At the moment demand is not large, but supply is small as well. The producers open the cells less quickly. Many growers work with Polish and Romanian employees, who go home for the holidays. That lasts till week 2 and then sorting will start. This year more so than in other years there was speculation about the pear market. This has mainly to do with the fact of the high prices of last season."

"As I can see now not much will change with regards to prices, there will be no big surprises. Towards next year there will be more product, but demand will also increase. If all goes well growers will have a better quality product beginning 2014 than they have now. There will be more than sufficient volume on the market and then I do not only talk about the Conference, but the other pear varieties on the world market, which will then be available."

Many small pears
He mentions that there are many small pears. And these will start appearing from January. Growers who say, that they have good pears, have small ones. The difference in price is high. For the good 50's the price is between 16 and 20 cents.
Those of 55 are around 30 cents and that is still rather cheap. Going to the 60's, those are the really interesting sizes, the prices are between 53 and 55 cents. To 65 and 70 there is an additional 10 to 15 cents. Therefore very large differences. There are certainly markets for the smaller pears, but traders must actively look for these. I expect prices for sizes 60 to 70 to remain high, but that they will not increase a lot. We will undoubtedly be stuck with these prices for the remainder of the season."
